Zur Arbeitsgemeinschaft

The Earth's natural spheres (biosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere etc) and the Anthroposphere are not only strongly interconnected in the Anthropocene, but they act as one single megasystem. In addition, humankind has become a major geological factor, thus Earth System Research, Sustainability Research and Transition Research must be interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary. The present activity of Prof. Reinhold Leinfelder's working group has a strong focus on Anthropocene research. Reinhold Leinfelder is member of the Anthropocene Working Group of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (the largest scientific body of the International Union of Geological Sciences, IUGS). Defining the lower boundary and internal stratigraphy of the Anthropocene includes the use of “technofossils” (such as particles of plastics, concrete, aluminium, fly ash, radioactive fallout, a wide set of isotope data, pollen and other stratigraphic proxies. The Anthropocene working group also includes archaeologists and environmental historians, among many other disciplines. Other activities include transformation research and new communication pathways towards Earth System compatibility.

Dr. Jens Zinke leads a paleoclimatological research group with the AG. Dr. Zinke’s research has a strong focus on geochemical studies of marine biological (massive corals) and sedimentary archives  from the tropical oceans as recorders of environmental and climate change over the past 300 years and during the Holocene. This work is motivated by the need to produce reliable, long-term baseline data of sea surface temperature, ocean currents and the hydrological cycle over the tropical/subtropical oceans and how they shape patterns of biodiversity in our oceans and adjacent coasts.

Dr. Diego Kersting leads the research on Mediterranean reefs with a special emphasis on corals of the genus Cladocora. Dr. Kersting is running a multi-year monitoring program of reef ecosystems and physical parameters in the Columbretes Islands 60km off the Spanish mainland. The research highlights the current threats to reef systems in the Mediterranean and the role of temperature extremes on coral mortalities. Dr. Kersting will start a DFG Eigene Stelle in 2018 which was recently funded.
